"Get out of your comfort zone so you can grow- the ultimate soul crushing slogan"
"Nothing grows in your comfort zone except fear and lack" Melissa H Dery
"A comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing ever grows there. ... you may choose to stay there out of boredom and fear or lack of confidence." Pamela Van Kirk Schmidt
"Getting Comfortable With Discomfort Is Crucial To Success" Margie Warrell
As a female entrepreneur who uses social media regularly, I am inundated with positive messages that are meant to uplift, encourage and motivate me to action.
Last week, after reading the umpteenth post on stepping outside of my comfort zone so I could succeed in life and ( more subtly , have meaning and value as a human being because I would finally be growing), I had had enough!
I could feel the anxiety of "not enoughness" piercing the core of my drooping heart.
I recovered quickly.
And here's why.
I work with people who are in the midst of or just on the other side of very big traumatic life events, like losing a limb, dealing with PTSD after surviving a war , getting a cancer diagnosis, or living with a serious debilitating illness.
Believe me when I say, they are soaked in discomfort day in and day out, on every level and in every way.
Just to stay hopeful, positive and afloat, is a huge effort. And a HUGE success.
What MY clients need IS comfort. They need to feel reassured that their life has a hopeful future, that they can access their joy and happiness, that they can feel freedom in their bodies again, that they can trust the goodness of life.
What they don't need is someone telling them the only way for them to grow and become successful is to get outside their comfort zone .
My clients are outside their comfort zone already, trying with so much determination to get their comfort back.
What MY clients need is to get comfortable with experiencing comfort. To get comfortable with receiving love, support, nurture, compassion, and the simple JOY of being alive today.
An unintegrated person sucks it up, embraces their fear and just does it. Later on, the reverberations of what is not healed or "growing" hits them.
An integrated person has the tools to relax into support, embraces their fear and does it with consciousness. That's real growth.
There is something to be said for stillness. After all, the seed is hibernating for quite some time, absorbing all the nourishment it needs before it is ready to grow.
It's winter here in New England . The trees are bare of leaves, waiting, quite comfortably. Their roots support them. The trees know they will grow again.
Want to experience growth by learning
how to be comfortable again?

Spaulding Rehabilitation Hosts FIRST EVER Yoga for Amputees Training at their Boston Home
| Yoga for Amputees Course, Chicago |
Woo hoo! I just taught Yoga for Amputees at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, MA.
http://spauldingrehab.org/conditions-and-treatments/amputee-rehabilitation
Now there WILL be Y4A program for amputees at this major US Hospital. Pioneering here we come!
I am passionate about helping amputees feel whole again through the healing power and science of YOGA.
As the first amputee yoga teacher in the US, I know what it is like to experience limb loss and all that goes with it. I know what it takes to walk again, dance again, and of course , practice yoga. And I know for sure that the full spectrum practice of YOGA, including breathing, meditation, yoga postures, relaxation and the royal pillars of yoga laid out in the second century can reduce pain, anxiety, stress, suffering, phantom pain and post traumatic stress for amputees who lost limbs due to violence such as war and terrorism, disease, or accident.
Spaulding Hospital is a major center in the US for innovation in the care of amputees. In fact, it was Spaulding Hospital who helped many of the Boston Bombing victims get their life back .
Yoga , for me, has made the hard road to recovery that much easier. By helping amputees, and the professionals who work with them, like incredibly caring physical therapists, occupational therapists, and physicians, including the director of the Amputee program at Spaulding, Dr. David Crandell, I feel so honored to be contributing to something that matters deeply to me and will without a doubt enhance the lives of amputee patients.
Do you know someone or some hospital that needs Yoga for Amputees? Send them my way. Yoga is a healing science which can make a HUGE difference in an amputee's life.
Need proof? Check out the writings of Paramahansa Yogananda, who considered Yoga a healing art and science.

Does JOY Matter?
Yes? No? Maybe? Who cares?
I do. I care about JOY. And I matter to me.
Taking a stand for JOY has been on my mind for a long time. Now I'm not only taking a stand, I am taking action.
Recently I picked up a high end fashion magazine. I used to indulge in them all the time- the newest trend, the best little black dress, what to say on a first date. I used to read them cover to cover, until I stopped. I discovered a walk on the beach was far more satisfactory, and listening to the wisdom of my own heart was far more lucrative than any suggestion offered by a total stranger in a magazine produced in a city I did not live in anymore.
So, I picked up this magazine and began to thumb through. By the end of my brief escape, I felt TERRIBLE about every aspect of my life. I wasn't this or that enough, apparently. I didn't have this or that. And I certainly didn't know her or him. The magazine was cushioned by articles about 'brave women' and ' how to feel good about yourself" ideas. But I didn't.
I was reminded once again that JOY is the missing ingredient from the message. Happiness or what this particular culture swears is happiness, was juiced up on every page of this magazine. But JOY? No where to be found.
This is because JOY doesn't require anything of us except to remember she is there, quietly delivering hope when we need it most, speaking up when someone does us wrong, or carrying us along when we feel like we can't take another step.
I say JOY does matter.
Find out for yourself.
